It’s a sign of the times.
Thousands of Verizon workers are taking to the picket lines — in a dispute with the company over whether their work has become outdated in a day and age where most people pass up having a land-based phone for having a cellular phone. The workers are striking to fight against management demands for contract givebacks — because they say work on landlines is unprofitable. Verizon says the 45,000 unionized workers in the east shouldn’t expect the kind of pay and benefits they got when everyone had a land line. The company says it is using managers to replace workers.
