Amazon is rolling out textbook rentals for its Kindle reading device.
The company says students can save up to 80 percent off list prices by renting texts. Tens of thousands of volumes from leading textbook publishers are available through the program. In a press release, Amazon says students can control costs by customizing the length of the rental period, which can be as short as 30 days or as long as 360 days. The rental program preserves a student’s notes and highlighted sections using cloud technology after the rental term is over. Books rented through Kindle Textbooks can be read using other devices including the iPhone and iPad.
