The FAA will impose stiff civil penalties against anyone caught shining a laser into the cockpit of an airplane.
A statement from Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood says shining a laser into a cockpit is “not a joke.” LaHood insists that lasers can temporarily blind a pilot. So far this year, pilots have reported more than one-thousand cases of lasers being directed at planes. Individual fines could reach 11-thousand dollars. Congress is considering legislation making it a federal crime to point a laser device at an airplane.
