Executives from Apple and Google will go before a congressional panel tomorrow to explain why their mobile devices have been secretly tracking their users’ every move.

U.S. lawmakers started raising questions after reports last month revealed Apple’s iPhone and iPad and Google’s Android phones were storing location data even when the devices’ tracking software was supposedly turned off.  Tuesday’s Senate panel hearing will look into whether gathering that information without the customers’ knowledge is a violation of their privacy rights.  Federal Trade Commission and Justice Department officials will also testify.  It has been widely speculated that Apple and Google could make big money if they find a way to use the location data to create targeted ads based on users’ habits and preferences.
