FBI agents may lack the skills necessary to investigate national security cyber crimes.
A Justice Department report finds some agents lack the technical knowledge and experience to investigate cyber crime cases. About 20 percent of the agency’s cyber division agents are assigned to national security cases. According to the report, federal government computer networks are under constant cyber attacks by those wanting to steal classified information or disrupt critical operations. The report also indicates several agents believe they don’t have the skills to investigate the crimes. The FBI says it’s adjusting its career path program which should give agents more experience. The agency may also open regional offices for the cyber crime division.
