Pediatricians should be talking to parents and children about kids use of Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and other social media tools.
A report from the American Academy of Pediatrics calls social media a health issue. The report says while these websites can enrich children’s lives, they can be hazardous to their mental and physical health. “Facebook depression” is one thing to look for. Children run the risk of social isolation, anxiety or depression if they can’t find a connection online. Cyberbullying, sexting and inappropriate content are other problems pediatricians and parents need to watch for.
