It’s a new approach for Netflix — one that may mean the video streaming giant is ready to take on entities like HBO.
Netflix is trying to buy the Internet streaming rights to a 26-episode drama starring Kevin Spacey — before the series is shown on a television network. If Netflix can land “House of Cards” it will own a title that would be unlike its other offerings — in that it won’t be something that has aired on TV or in theaters. Netflix started the year with 20 million subscribers. Some analysts believe by the end of this year the service could be as large as HBO, which is believed to have about 28 million subscribers.
